Fourth grade is having a fantastic fall!

Book Clubs are underway during Reading Workshop! We’ve created Club Constitutions to help keep our groups on task and focused during book club conversations. We are reading books about social issues including sibling rivalry, getting along with friends, homelessness, and poverty. Readers are identifying the theme and the author’s message about the social issue and writing about it in our notebooks.

Do you know another name for the fraction ½? Fourth grade mathematicians do! In our Fractions and Decimals unit, we’ve learned how to find equivalent fractions and convert fractions to decimals. We’ve used a wide range of math tools to help us learn about fractions like fraction circles and number lines.

Realistic fiction stories are coming to life in the fourth grade classes. Students have brought characters with realistic problems to life and used story mountains to plan a way for their characters to deal with these problems. Our authors used writing strategies such as show not tell and meaningful dialogue. We are looking forward to sharing our stories across the grade level in early December.

In Social Studies we are learning about the Lenape people who were the first people who lived in NJ. The day before Thanksgiving, fourth graders participated in a Native American celebration. Students wrote Native American stories and created pictures to go along with their stories the way the Native Americans would have recorded them. They also made dream catchers, another Native American tradition. Many thanks to the parent volunteers who donated supplies and their time to help with our celebration.
