What does a School Counselor do?
A School Counselor provides the children with a safe place to work through difficulties that may arise in school or at home. The Counselor works in conjunction with the Teachers to help the child's social and emotional functioning. The School Counselor communicates with the child's family to work as a team to make sure the strategies and skills can be implemented beyond the school day.
When should I reach out to a School Counselor?
I love keeping in contact with families of the children in school. This can be to share a positive of negative life event that has occurred or even just to keep me updated! Below I have listed some of the most common times when families should reach out to me:
- Your child does not want to come to school
- Your family is going through a new life transition or change in the household
- Your child shares that he/she is being bullied
- You are noticing a social/emotional change in your child
- Your child shares negative emotions he/she has been feeling
How can I contact the School Counselor?
I can be best contacted via Email or phone 973-543-4251, ext. 150. I will be sure to get back to you as soon as possible.
When should my child see the School Counselor?
While I am here to support your child's social and emotional needs throughout their years at Hilltop, I also love hearing positive stories that the children have experienced throughout their weeks! Your child should seek out their Counselor when they are having a difficult time managing emotions, behaviors, or social conflicts that may arise. Below you will find a few of the most common reasons why children seek out their School Counselor:
- Difficulty making/managing friendships
- Experiencing negative emotions that they need help working through
- Adjusting to new family transitions or changes in the household
- Not wanting to attend school
How can my child see the Counselor?
Your child can stop in to see me in my office at any time! While my door is always open, if I am not running a group/session, I also see the students in the classrooms and at lunch/recess. I want to ensure they get to know me from their arrival to Hilltop as well as throughout their days in school.
When is the School Counselor available?
I am at Hilltop on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. I am also available via phone or email on those days as well.
Is what my child shares with the Counselor confidential?
Information that your child shares with me is always confidential. The only time this confidentiality is broken is if a child discusses potential to hurt themselves or others. In Counseling Groups, all members are reminded that what we share remains in the group. I strive to ensure that kids feel comfortable to share in my office by also knowing that they have my trust.
