What does a School Counselor do?
A School Counselor provides the children with a safe place to work through difficulties that may arise in school or at home. The Counselor works in conjunction with the Teachers to help the child's social and emotional functioning. The School Counselor communicates with the child's family to work as a team to make sure the strategies and skills can be implemented beyond the school day.

- Your family is going through a new life transition or change in the household
- Your child shares that he/she is being bullied
- You are noticing a social/emotional change in your child
- Your child shares negative emotions he/she has been feeling

When should my child see the School Counselor?
While we are here to support your child's social and emotional needs throughout their years at Hilltop, we also love hearing positive stories that the children have experienced throughout their weeks! Your child should seek out their Counselor when they are having a difficult time managing emotions, behaviors, or social conflicts that may arise. Below you will find a few of the most common reasons why children seek out their School Counselor:
- Difficulty making/managing friendships
- Experiencing negative emotions that they need help working through
- Adjusting to new family transitions or changes in the household
- Not wanting to attend school
How can my child see the Counselor?
Your child can stop in to see the Counselors at any time! While our door is always open, if we are not running a group/session, we also see the students in the classrooms and at lunch/recess. We want to ensure they get to know us from their arrival to Hilltop as well as throughout their days in school.
When is the School Counselor available?
Dr. Carly Fisher’s Schedule: I am at Hilltop on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. I am also available via phone or email on those days as well.
Mrs. Ferraro’s Schedule: I am at Hilltop on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I am also available via phone or email on those days as well.
Is what my child shares with the Counselor confidential?
Information that your child shares with us is always confidential. The only time this confidentiality is broken is if a child discusses the potential to hurt themselves or others. In Counseling Groups, all members are reminded that what we share remains in the group. We strive to ensure that kids feel comfortable to share in our office by also knowing that they have our trust..
