I am honored to be the School Counselor at Hilltop Elementary for the 2018-2019 School Year! My goal as a Counselor is to always ensure the students have a safe space to share any fears, concerns, or troubles that may come up. We will work together to tackle these challenges so that the kids learn skills and strategies to help them throughout their lives.

Elementary school is a time where social and emotional needs are essential to a child’s development. I will be taking part in teaching Character Education lessons in the classroom that will promote success in these areas of development. I will also hold small groups and individual counseling to further address a variety of topics and needs that may arise.

I love getting to know each of the students as well as their families. Please contact me via email, phone, or schedule a time to come in for a face-to-face meeting.

I look forward to helping your children learn and grow at Hilltop Elementary!

Every month I will upload a newsletter to share some Counseling news. You will also receive these newsletters via email as well!

Elementary school is a time where social and emotional needs are essential to the child’s development. As the School Counselor, I will reach the children in a variety of ways through Character Education classroom lessons that promote success in these areas of development, individual meetings to work on specific issues or concerns, as well as group lunch bunches to further address a variety of topics and needs that may arise.

Lunch bunches will occur for six-week sessions ranging from a variety of topics. 2-3 lunch groups run at a time and span approximately two months. Over the course of the year, at least six different group topics will be offered. You will always receive an email stating what topics are being offered and you will have the opportunity to sign your child up.

At the end of the six-week sessions, you will receive a newsletter sharing the skills/strategies your child had worked on in order to further implement them beyond the six weeks and beyond the school day.

Each month I will also provide a Character Education lesson to every classroom. Character Education helps children to become responsible, contributing, and caring members of the school environment as well as in the world. The school works together to develop positive character traits in our very own students and staff that will then be further carried on in their own lives. Character Education addresses a variety of topics and lessons that help create a positive social climate. As a school, we will focus on one pillar at a time that would be further taught throughout the school day. Character Education is incorporated into the child's school day through these class lessons from the School Counselor to help educate the whole child as well as monthly school-wide pillars that focus on one teaching point. Around the hallways, you can see reminders and words of encouragement to promote a positive, uplifting environment based on respect and love for one another.

Hilltop has been named a New Jersey School of Character as well as a National School of Character in 2018. Hilltop students and staff model the character pillars daily while also demonstrating character education development beyond just the classroom but in every aspect of their day. They are encouraged to show respect, kindness, and compassion towards others which has helped create a feeling of family here at Hilltop.

Throughout the year, students have access to a schoolwide bulletin board which focuses on the pillar of the month and involves each student demonstrating their use of the pillar. Additionally, our fourth-grade students take part in leading a “Whole School Morning Meeting” three times a year becoming leaders to the younger grades and displaying their knowledge on the character education pillar.

Each year Hilltop adds a new Character Education book that all students have the opportunity to hear in their classrooms, courtesy of an HSA grant. This year, students were read the book Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller. Students received journals that allowed them to respond to a prompt focused on each book, which they will be able to add on to throughout all their years at Hilltop. The goal is to further understand and develop in each character education pillar.

At the end of every month, you will receive a “Counselor’s Corner” newsletter updating you on any new counseling news as well as what lessons were taught in each grade level. Additionally, I provide important reminders or helpful information from that month to keep open communication throughout the year.
