Superintendent's Message

Greetings, welcome, and thank you for your interest in Mendham’s schools. We are proud of them and proud to serve in them. We hope you will choose to visit.

If it takes a village to raise a child, and we agree that it does, Mendham Borough has the resources of caring educators and community members and institutions to raise children very well indeed.

Excellence is the community and school goal – in academics, aesthetics, and athletics coupled with excellence in respect, responsibility, caring, and contribution. This highly supportive community enables us to make excellence a viable goal. Parent participation, especially in teams such as the Home-School Association and the Parent Councils, provides ongoing support and feedback that propels achievement. An expert staff is the essential foundation, and this community has just that, an expert staff.

Hilltop Elementary School provides a caring environment that supports the learning and development of children in grades kindergarten through four. In this setting children learn to love learning, essential for success in personal and professional life. The Columbia University Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop Program is the foundation that articulates Language Arts Literacy through the grades. The foundation for mathematics is the highly successful Everyday Mathematics program from the University of Chicago, which teaches the basic operations of arithmetic, algebra, and other mathematics in context; students need not wonder what their math is “good for.” Science, Social Studies, and Spanish are the other basic academic subjects. They are complemented by technology, physical education, art and music (including chorus and elective band and orchestra study).

At Mountain View Middle School students learn in a New Jersey School to Watch, a proud State-awarded designation. Incessant focus on ongoing improvement and a deep interest in implementing forward thinking educational ideas have led Mountain View to carefully considered changes that merge comfortably with rich traditions. Teachers College Reading and Writing continues at the middle school. Everyday Mathematics gives way in sixth grade to district-designed mathematics instruction that enables students to complete algebra before entering Mendham High School. Thematically-based social studies, inquiry-based science studies, and communication-centered World Language study are augmented by excellent performances in art, music, technology, and physical education. Plentiful extra-curricular opportunities and varied athletic teams make important contributions to skill and character development. An unusual “EEE period” permits students to choose enrichment, extension, and elective activities.

The integrated pre-kindergarten program sets a carefully aligned stage for future achievement for children with and without special needs. It makes a clear difference for its young students as they start their study of writing, reading, numbers, and teamwork.

Technology to support learning and communication is abundant and well utilized. Carefully maintained facilities replicate the pattern of pride seen throughout the borough and contribute, as all other aspects of the schools, to the intrinsic value of living and working in this close-knit community.

To reiterate: thank you for your interest in Mendham’s schools. We are proud of them, and hope you will choose to visit us.
